1.2842 steel (90MnCrV8) is a European standard cold working tool steel and one of the most widely used tool steels, with high dimensional stability, edge retention and good machinability. Its performance and application are basically the same as material 1.2510 (100MnCrW4). In terms of performance, DIN 1.2842 tool steel is comparable to material 1.2510. Steel 1.2510 contains tungsten (W), which gives it higher wear resistance and resistance to tempering.

1.2842 Alloy steel application
Suitable for cutting and punching tools, small shear blades, tangling rings and jaws, reamers, measuring tools, sliders, guides, plastic and rubber molds.
Typical applications include medium-size dies, stamping tools, drawing punches, broaches, bushings, lathe centers, grippers, main cavity countersunk hobs, plug gauges, thread gauges, thread cutting tools, and precision measuring tools. It is also a popular tool steel used in cams, cutting knives, cold taps, reamers, collets, cutting hobs, strip slinting tools, trimming dies, tube expansion rolls, plastic molds and woodworking tools.
