317L stainless steel
Product Description

317L stainless steel is a low-carbon variant of 317 stainless steel, belonging to the austenitic stainless steel family. Its chemical composition is characterized by high chromium (18-20%) and molybdenum (3-4%) contents, with a carbon content limited to ≤0.03%—a key feature that enhances its resistance to intergranular corrosion, especially after welding.
Key Properties:
Corrosion Resistance: Superior to 304 and 316 stainless steels, 317L exhibits excellent resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and general corrosion in aggressive environments, such as those containing chloride ions, sulfuric acid, and other industrial chemicals. This makes it ideal for applications in marine, chemical processing, and wastewater treatment industries.
Mechanical Properties: It has a tensile strength of 485 MPa minimum, a yield strength of 170 MPa minimum, and an elongation of 40% minimum. These properties remain stable across a wide temperature range, from cryogenic conditions to moderate high temperatures (up to around 800°C in oxidizing atmospheres).
Weldability: The low carbon content ensures good weldability without significant loss of corrosion resistance. Common welding methods like TIG (GTAW) and MIG (GMAW) are suitable, and post-weld annealing is often unnecessary for most applications.
Formability: Similar to other austenitic stainless steels, 317L can be easily formed using standard techniques such as bending, rolling, and deep drawing, thanks to its high ductility.
Typical Applications:
Chemical storage and processing equipment (tanks, pipelines, valves)
Desalination plants
Pharmaceutical and food processing machinery (where high purity and corrosion resistance are required)
Marine components exposed to saltwater
Pollution control equipment
In summary, 317L stainless steel is valued for its exceptional corrosion resistance, versatility in fabrication, and reliability in harsh environments, making it a preferred choice in industries demanding high-performance materials.
